These spiritual window-shoppers

These spiritual window-shoppers

by Rumi

These spiritual window-shoppers
These spiritual window-shoppers,
who idly ask, ‘How much is that?’ Oh, I’m just looking.
They handle a hundred items and put them down,
shadows with no capital.

What is spent is love and two eyes wet with weeping.
But these walk into a shop,
and their whole lives pass suddenly in that moment,
in that shop.

Where did you go? “Nowhere.”
What did you have to eat? “Nothing much.”

Even if you don’t know what you want,
buy something, to be part of the exchanging flow.

Start a huge, foolish project,
like Noah.

It makes absolutely no difference
what people think of you.

Introvert update: going places alone

Introvert update: going places alone allows me to meditate on the environment and how to interact with it, but without the extra complexity of my internal circle meshing with that space in impossibly complex ways. Good for introverts – can get acclimated. Maybe being out in the world alone is how to become a leader. Get good at life by engaging with the world head on and alone.

Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden

Those Winter Sundays

by Robert Hayden

Sundays too my father got up early
and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,
then with cracked hands that ached
from labor in the weekday weather made
banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.

I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.
When the rooms were warm, he’d call,
and slowly I would rise and dress,
fearing the chronic angers of that house,

Speaking indifferently to him,
who had driven out the cold
and polished my good shoes as well.
What did I know, what did I know
of love’s austere and lonely offices?

When friends gather

When friends gather
Like rain clouds, they become one
And their love condenses
And it is released upon the earth
Nourishing all its creatures
Replenishing its rivers and streams
Change is a ruthless wind
It blows ceaselessly
Carrying off with it
All of our most precious moments
But here, now
In the presence of each other
We are reminded of who we truly are
Children of the great benevolence
Which brings water when we are thirsty
And light to our darkest places

In order for us to transcend the narcissism in our political system, we have to transcend our own codependence.
